John Avlon is an award-winning journalist, author and historian. He is a former CNN anchor and analyst and previously served as the editor-in-chief of The Daily Beast as well as chief speechwriter to the Mayor of New York during the attacks of 9/11. His books include Independent Nation, Wingnuts, Washington’s Farewell, and Lincoln & the Fight for Peace as well as the Deadline Artists anthologies. He was the 2024 Democratic nominee for Congress in NY-01 and currently hosts the podcast “How To Fix It“ on The Bulwark and serves as the Chairman of Citizens Union of New York. He lives in New York with his wife, Margaret Hoover, and their two children.
