Margaret Hoover is an American political commentator, author, feminist, and advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. She is the host of PBS’s Firing Line with Margaret Hoover, a modern revival of the iconic public affairs program originally hosted by William F. Buckley Jr. for more than three decades.
In addition to hosting Firing Line, Hoover serves as a political commentator for CNN. Her public service experience includes roles in the White House under President George W. Bush, at the Department of Homeland Security, on Capitol Hill, and on two presidential campaigns. She is also the president of the American Unity Fund, a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing freedom and equality for LGBTQ+ Americans.
Hoover is the author of the bestselling book American Individualism: How a New Generation of Conservatives Can Save the Republican Party (2011). Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Daily Beast, CNN.com, FoxNews.com, and The New York Daily News. She serves on the boards of Stanford University’s Hoover Institution, the Hoover Presidential Foundation, and the Belgian American Educational Foundation. Raised in Colorado, Hoover has lived in China, Mexico, Bolivia, and Taiwan. She speaks fluent Spanish, has studied Mandarin Chinese, and earned her B.A. in Spanish literature with a minor in political science from Bryn Mawr College. In April 2022, she was appointed to the Board of Directors of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL).
