Ron Bechet is a native New Orleanian and the Victor H. Labat Professor of Art at Xavier University of Louisiana, where he has taught for more than twenty years and served as department chair for many of those. He completed his BFA at the University of New Orleans and earned an MFA in Painting from Yale University School of Art.
Bechet is known for intimate large-scale drawings and paintings that are often inspired by his experiences and observations of the consequences of forces of nature and time on the place and the human experience. His art has been exhibited nationally and internationally and he has collaborated on work and exhibitions with visual artist John T. Scott, with whom he shared studio space for many years as well as teaching careers in the art department at Xavier University. Believing in reciprocity and community involvement, Bechet is an arts activist who serves and collaborates with organizations across the city.
